New Years Day in a Cave

Today’s adventure took us a few hours drive south of Hobart to Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs. Our  road kill count continued during this road trip and our current carcass count is at 63.

The road to Hastings from Hobart takes you up some hills with the iconic views you get driving through much of this state, however if you get travel sickness, some of the winding roads may not give you maximum enjoyment if you don’t take some motion sickness medication or use pressure points. However once you arrive at Hastings you can buy yourself a day ticket which gives you a guided tour of the caves as well as entry to the Thermal Springs pool.

On the cave tour, tour guides provide insight into the names of the different rock formations and how they come into existence as well as a little bit of History of the cave’s discovery. The tour takes about an hour in which you see an active cave (a cave which is still forming, so no touching!) and if you’re lucky, a Tasmanian cave spider, cave crickets and some glow worms. There are even the ancient remains of a wallaby. The cave’s rock formations provide a great backdrop with photos (with flash – there isn’t much lighting in the cave), but be warned, the temperature inside is only 7 degrees Celsius. But that’s okay; that is what the Thermal Spring pool is for.

The thermal spring water of the pool is at a natural temperature of a tepid 28 degrees Celcius. The only downside is that it looks like a swimming pool and I imagine itd get pretty packed during peak times (directly before and after tours). If you’re not into all the walking involved in the cave exploration (only 240 steps, but with slipper surfaces) you can also just buy pool entry on its own.

On our way back to camp we bought some fresh apples and cherries. Unfortunately they didn’t have any 70 cent toffee apples left :(.

Tomorrow’s adventure…Port Arthur.

Lots of love xoxo Chani
