Another early morning today. Perhaps I should stop saying this as I anticipate that every morning henceforth will be an early one. If it is not an early start I will begin my entry with the change.
This morning we packed up camp and departed from our Cosy Corner location with Mt Pearson’s State reserve, for another day on the road. One thing that has continued to surprise me during our road trip is counting the number of road kill (mostly squashed marsupials) found on Tasmanian roads. Either we are very vigilant in Victoria about cleaning dead mammals from the road, we have less animals or Tasmanians don’t like to dodge the wildlife and just ram right through them. That or the wildlife here just aren’t road savvy. Mum and Dad have taken to counting them it really is that phenomenal.
The wildlife warning signs hear are subsequently quite amusing considering; they depict what appears to be a kangaroo lifting up a car and its window cracking. That’s one mighty marsupial!
On our travels down to our next destination we passed a little beach called ‘Lagoon beach’ however did not stop. From afar it looked gorgeous, with beautifully forming waves, white sand and clear blue water. Perhaps if you wish to travel along the east coast of Tasmania, you check this place out. By 10:45am, we decided to stop at Bicheno and eat our pre-packed sandwich breakfast by the sea. It smelled quite horrid where we sat however we were near a number of fishing boats so perhaps this was the route of the odor.
Then on the road again, further south to Freycinet National Park where Wine Glass Bay is accessible, only to find that all campsites had been booked. So we backtracked a little up the road to Friendly Beaches which is part of one of the State’s reserves, where we again were lucky enough to find a secluded campsite with an equally secluded beach, with squeaky white sand, awesome waves, lightly orange lichen covered rocks with rock pools and gorgeous views. No flushing toilet or showers again but I am optimistic that our next destination will have at least some running water. However I have been economical and bathed sufficiently with what is available – it is amazing what you can do with a cup, a bucket of water, a face-cloth, some soap, a chair and a tree. The lack of amenities had not at all detracted from the experience just provided an interesting change.
After setting up and eating lunch, the boys, Dad and I went for a swim and body surf, mum joined us later. The weather so far has been great. The sun is shining, the sky is blue; although there is a bit of a cool chill every once and a while, but as I explained in an earlier post, the air is unusual here.
As I write this, the boys have gone for a walk/exploration of the seaside rocks, while I will soon sit down and rest for today. Tomorrow I will walk for 3 hours return; that’s the trip to Wine Glass bay- a beautiful location inaccesable by vehicles.
Until tomorrow;
Chani
